Can you still stream music from pandora or other wifi music apps in the background of an iPhone 5 while running this with a obd2 app upfront? Dec 3, 2013
Ideally, yes. So long you do a proper configuration of your WiFi (read leave the default router setting blank when connecting to the Elm327), your phone should use your 3g/4g network. Haven’t tried it myself, but other folks have reported success in doing so.

Does it work with other smart phones than the iphone? Oct 1, 2013
This device was made to work with devices that could access it via a wireless network. I believe It comes with a disc of programs to use it with a computer. That being said it is conceivable that other smart phones would work with it. However, the manufacturer only provides instructions to use it with iPhone. So don’t expect much help from them to get it to work with other phones. Even if you get it to work with an Android device you will probably still have to buy an expensive app to get it to connect properly. I would suggest just getting a standalone OBD code reader, because of it being… » Read More

What version of the elm327 chip is used for this product ? Several people have asked this question with no response…. Dec 3, 2013
According to the OBD Fusion app on my phone it’s an ELM327 v1.5. I’m assuming this is being asked to determine if it’s an official Elm chip. According to the elm electronics site it would seem v1.5 means it is not official: “A few clone makers have carefully worded ads that make it seem like they are using genuine version v1.4a, v1.5, v1.5a, or v2.1 Elm chips. These can not use Elm Electronics ICs as we have never made those versions.”

So for these people saying it is not CAN compliant, can you please explain why, when CAN is a protocol of OBDII, and answering “No it is only OBD2 compliant”, is like answering a question about whether a car can drive off road with “No it can only drive”. If it’s not CAN compliant, then what protocols of OBDII is it compliant with??? More information is required from these people who answered no.

Will this unit work on motorcycles? Specifically, 2006 Triumph Speed Triple? Jan 27, 2014
Saw your question and it got me curious. I ran out and checked it on my 2012 Triumph Street Triple R and it worked as expected. I tried it with DashCommand and it was able to show most of the parameters including; coolant temp, RPMs, intake temp, MPG and a few others I didn’t get to test since I can’t go out for a ride to data log. I don’t have the CEL on right now so it didn’t read any codes, but I’m guessing it would find them if they were present. Also tried it with ODBCarDoctor and it was also able to read the parameters. Hope that helps!

I cannot get the DashCommand program from the provided CD to install. It fails on both an iPhone and an iPad. Nov 21, 2013
Loading programs from another source outside of the Apple App Store is generally not allowed on the iPhone/iPad. The DashCommand program should be purchased from the App store and it would install from there as well. I have used the Elm327 with my iPhone5 and DashCommand without issue and without using any associated programs from the CD.

does this work on all vehicles Mar 9, 2014
This should work on all vehicles with an OBD-II interface. This connection is available on most vehicles produced after 1996. Check your vehicle’s manual for more information, also inspect the vehicle visually to find the OBD-II connection. It is basically an adapter, so it depends on the software that you use on your smartphone/tablet/PC. For example, tested and works with Mini Cooper S 2006 and iPhone 4, with EngineLink app.

yes, with appropriate app software (i use dashboard commander) this will allow you to read, and clear the codes. However, if there is a problem with your car, the code will reappear. If it is emissions related you’ll likely fail the test. my car had a misfire, traced to a bad ignition coil. I had autozone read the code for me to find the fault, bought the parts and repaired the car. Autozone won’t clear codes however, only read them thus, i had to find another solution. Not sure if there is a clear way to know exactly what will monitor, and what will not. I found that different cars monitor different things. Depends on what you need to do. If all you want is to read and clear codes as well as monitor a few common PID’s then obd fusion works fine and is cheap at only 5 dollars. If you want to data log or something thought you’ll need to spend more. Search the Ifruit store for “obd” and you should find multiple options.

I have no clue what any blackberry device can do. The Elm327 “publishes” a wifi network; basically the same protocol used by every coffee shop on planet Earth, the Moon and planet Mars. :-) The only difference is that the ELM network only gives you access to the ECU of the attached vehicle, *NOT* “the internet”. Once you establish the network connection (From iOS, tap: Settings ==> WiFi ==> Choose Network), that connection becomes “transparent” and you need some app or other program that does the OBD-II communications between your computer/device and the… » Read More

will it read codes on a ford f250 7.3 diesel Jan 11, 2014
I expect so, they say it reads codes in vehicles dating back to mid-90s. I have no experience with any vehicle except a VW from a few years ago, which works great. All you need to do is find a plug for it, usually around or under steering wheel. I think they are pretty standard for vehicles over the past 20 years, though the amount of data available may have increased with time. I found plug in a 6.0 L diesel F-250 from 10 years ago

I have a 2001 Ford F-550 with the Powerstroke 7.3l engine. It uses J1850-PWM OBD protocol for communications. Will this work? Other readers did not and they stated they support all OBD2 protocols. Anyone using this on a pre 2006 Ford Powerstroke? Jan 5, 2014
It’s designed to work in most American vehicles. I’m pretty sure that I’ve seen the Ford F-150 in the list of vehicles that it’s compatible with, so yes you should be good.

will it read boost with the Torque Pro app on my Iphone 4s for my 2012 Ecoboost F150 Dec 31, 2013
You will have to ask the people who wrote that app. This device provides the HW and low-level interface to talk to any “OBD-II” compatible ECU, so anything that is available in the OBD-II data can be accessed. I have no clue which apps show what data.

My truck may have a 12-pin connector. Will the Elm 327 work or can it be adapted to work? Dec 18, 2013
It depends mostly on when your truck was manufactured. Generally, all vehicles manufactured for sale in the US for the 1995 model year and newer have the connector. There may be some rare exceptions but this is generally the case.

I have a 1993 GMC Sierra truck. The code reader made for it is the Innova GM Code Reader 1.6 that scans ECM codes A-B and ABS A-H. Dec 18, 2013
You dont have OBDII because truck is to old, the OBDII system came standard only in 1996 and newer vehicles

Does this read ABS codes and TCCM faults? Dec 12, 2013
It reads and clears check engine faults with the app. Don’t think it does ABS codes. The ELM327 is just the communications device via WIFI. The app, in my case, is DashCommander which is pretty robust. It comes with software for a laptop but I haven’t used since I use it with my iPhone

It is a pretty safe bet on the iPad Air, as long as you can turn on TCP/IP. Works fine on iPhone with 7.0.3 and OBD Fusion.

When I received this unit the disk was broken. Is there a way to download the info that was on the disk? Nov 19, 2013
Most of the information on the disk is related to programs to use the ELM with a computer. I never used this functionality so can not tell you about it. However, the disk is not necessary if you are connecting it to an iphone or other idevice.

i plug it in and a solid red light turns on and nothing else happens. it also does not show up on my iphone. what do i do Sep 19, 2013
I plugged mine in then the light came on and I then went into my phone settings(iPhone) and went to wifi and it showed up in there. If that doesn’t work then try just going into the app (mine is called EngineLink) and from there you should be able to hit connect and it may work that way but I don’t see why it wouldn’t show up in your phone.

Can I erase “change oil” message ? Sep 18, 2013
Unfortunately, no. at least i wasn’t able to in my friends Honda Odyssey. Works fantastic for ECU codes but i think a traditional “vagcom” is required to clear service codes.

can i bleed abs system with elm327? i need to replace wheel cylinder and i have to bleed abs system for this. Jan 1, 2014
Bleeeding the brakes is a manual process (and a dirty one) that is only accomplished by getting under the car and performing a brake bleeding procedure. I’d advice you seek a brake repair mechanic if you don’t fully understand the process.

Does this device turn off when you turn the car off? Or do I have to unplug it to avoid draining the car battery? Sep 28, 2013
I have not noticed any additional battery drain while this device is plugged in. I believe it only operates when the ignition key is turned on. If this device does operate while the ignition is off, I think it may draw little or less than the security system on the car. Hope this helps.

Can This unit work in conjunction with my PC Wi-FI? Which software do I install or do I need to purchase PC software? Sep 16, 2013
This device should be compatible with any device that contains a wireless receiver that is within the specified range of the ELM327. As for software, the device should be shipped with a disc that contains several different programs ranging from easy to medium user difficulty, and scoping various compatibility options. I myself installed two of the more in depth disc mounted scan tool programs on my laptop PC, and have personally had no issue in utilizing any of the desired analysis functions.
